Experience The Life Of Satyajit Ray With Nemai Ghosh

Text by Huzan Tata

The photographer’s monochrome images take you through the life of the auteur

For lovers and students of Indian cinema, any discussion about the field is incomplete without a mention of Satyajit Ray. The late filmmaker, writer and illustrator, known for his The Apu Trilogy and tales of Feluda – and his 32 National Film Awards – was a master of the craft. Now, admirers of Ray and his cinema get to know the man behind the camera through a series of works, Nemai Ghosh: Satyajit Ray & Beyond.

The monochrome photographs captured by Ghosh, who was Ray’s biographer for decades, brings to life the late director’s life and works, as well as documents moments of regional cinema, and exclusive images of actors and sets. Get peeks at Sharmila Tagore in a pensive moment, and Smita Patil in all her glory.

‘Nemai Ghosh’s consistent documentation of the work of the auteur Satyajit Ray and Indian cinema is both an aesthetic delight and a significant record of this period…’ says Ashish Anand, managing director of DAG Modern, that is showcasing the exhibition in association with Mumbai’s Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum. Here’s one for aficionados of the cinema of yore.

Nemai Ghosh: Satyajit Ray & Beyond is on display at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai (91 A, Rani Baug, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Marg, Byculla) until November 3, 2015.
