15 artists experiment with ‘space’ and its various meanings

Artists, working in any medium, may be able to create works with minimal materials. But, the one thing every artist needs, and what is the theme for a new group show in Delhi – is space. Whether it is a blank canvas, with scrap materials, in a room or on a wall, visual artists work in a physical territory. But is there more to the word? Working Spaces – Around Memory and Perception, a group exhibition curated by Roobina Karode, has artists ‘giving the amorphousness of space physical dimensions through shape, colour, form and structure, to accentuate its experience and meaning’.

The show has works in diverse media by 15 artists from South Asia – Madan Mahatta’s photographs, Pooja Iranna’s models, Anish Kapoor’s ‘magical-real’ installation and late Nasreen Mohamedi’s paper cut-outs are on display at the exhibition. Other big names whose artworks are included in the show are Nalini Malani, Jeram Patel, Manisha Parekh and Rana Begum.

Says Karode about this unique exhibit, ‘Space…is inspired and created around memory and perception…and the artists manifest ideas about materiality and non-materiality, fullness and emptiness, form and non-form, often entering into realms of the transcendental and the mystical.’

Working Spaces is on display at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (145, South Court Mall, Saket) until February 28, 2015.
