In the post-Emergency era of the ’80s, social critique found its way into the works of several creative media including films, theatre, literature and of course, art. At Akara Art’s second show, Travelling in Two Boats at the Same Time, ten influential artists of that time take you through their canvases, each shaped by different ideologies, narratives, visual aesthetics and dialogue, but still similar in various ways.
Featuring creations by internationally-renowned artists Gieve Patel, Sudhir Patwardhan, N N Rimzon, Jyothi Basu, Nalini Malani, Vivan Sundaram, Bhupen Khakhar, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, Dhruva Mistry and G Ravinder Reddy, the exhibition that’s curated by Justin Ponmany takes you through their artistic journeys. As Ponmany explains, ‘Inevitably the recurring simultaneity in contemporaneity, whether close or far, might be traced by those inquisitive about parallel trajectories along the lines of facial symmetry, as they mirror and rival each other through binary positions along a timeline.’
Travelling in Two Boats at the Same Time is on display at Akara Art, Mumbai (1st floor, 4/5 Churchill Chambers, 32 Mereweather Road, Colaba) until August 31, 2016
