Fabien Charuau: A Thousand Kisses Deep

Compiled by Huzan Tata and Wyanet Vaz

“The walls of my home are covered by layers and layers of my test prints,” says artist Fabien Charuau as he puts on display his tryst with computer and generative art

Lensman Fabien Charuau presents an art show with a twist. His latest offering, A Thousand Kisses Deep, has on display three projects. One includes images of couples kissing, which are processed through an algorithm that reveals the energy of the pixels in each photo. The second installation, Been Seen Trying, takes a closer look at crowds at prayer, using a facial recognition software to produce interesting results. The final creation, Send Some Candids, presents a single channel video of photographs collected by Charuau from Internet forums to reveal their ‘hidden essence’.

5 Questions with the artist, Fabien Charuau

1. Artistic motivations “My main preoccupation as an artist is to reflect on digital images (still or moving)  and work on the tension which is created between our understanding of these images which is very human and physical, and the mathematical objects that they really are. Also, I have a deep interest in documenting the changes within the society of our country.”
2. Inspirations “My inspirations are the nascent computer and generative art, the new frontier which is the new media.”
3. On the wall at home “The walls of my home are covered by layers and layers of my test prints. My studio doesn’t have a square inch of white wall left bare.”
4. Concerns that find a place in your art “Sensuality, whether as a political tool or as the touch of a soul.”
5. If not an artist, you would be… “Difficult! Most artists cannot phantom living without creating. Life seems very stale without art.”

A Thousand Kisses Deep is on show at Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai till October 2015.
