This Bangladesh-born artist is exhibiting her first solo exhibition in India as we speak. It’s been less than a decade since her debut show and Ayesha Sultana is already on her way to international fame. Outside The Field Of View is all about bridging the gap between past and present, plugging spaces that are lost in the continuum of time, and sights that are overlooked. Her works give the impression of being in present continuous tense. They aren’t live; but to observe them would take the audience back to their creation.

For instance, the Monolith IV has an impression of sorts on the image. Could we then decipher this as “‘handling’ the photograph?” Alternatively, a different image has a crack running right through its centre. Another series, graphite drawings, all hold geometric figures that mean to express space, but with her darkening them, give the illusion of filling emptiness. Each piece of art is almost philosophical.

Outside The Field Of View is on at the Experimenter, Kolkata until June 26, 2014.

5 Questions with the artist, Ayesha Sultana

1. Artistic motivation “It is the need to articulate by being alive through learning and understanding myself.”
2. Inspirations “Places I have lived in, old buildings, music, and literature.”3. Art in your home “Wishlist among many: Georges Seurat (drawings), Man Ray, Eva Hesse, Roni Horn (sculpture), Jessica Harrison (ceramic work).”4. Concerns that show up in your art “As a contemporary artist, you have to often position yourself in the social circle, and contextualise the work to be relevant today. However, ideas, values and pre-ordained structures keep shifting and revising in my practice. In the recent solo presentation, Outside The Field Of View, there is an emphasis on ‘looking’ and the sensation of space and depth, as conceptual/formal concerns in my work. In perception, depth can be considered as one of the primary spatial dimensions. There has been an ongoing interest in the relationship and idea of the two-dimensional flatness of an object, a geometric concept, as the construction of an illusionistic three-dimensional projection.”

5. If you weren’t an artist, you would be… “A musician.”
