Defining Space

This Bangladesh-born artist is exhibiting her first solo exhibition in India as we speak. It’s been less than a decade since her debut show and Ayesha Sultana is already on her way to international fame. Outside The Field Of View is all about bridging the gap between past and present, plugging spaces that are lost in the continuum of time, and sights that are overlooked. Her works give the impression of being in present continuous tense. They aren’t live; but to observe them would take the audience back to their creation.

For instance, the Monolith IV has an impression of sorts on the image. Could we then decipher this as “‘handling’ the photograph?” Alternatively, a different image has a crack running right through its centre. Another series, graphite drawings, all hold geometric figures that mean to express space, but with her darkening them, give the illusion of filling emptiness. Each piece of art is almost philosophical.
