The Act of Creation

Text by Huzan Tata

Artist ‘enfant terrible’ Shine Shivan lets viewers in on his artistic process, inviting them to watch as he works on his creations

Born in Kerala and settled in Faridabad, artist Shine Shivan – known as the ‘enfant terrible’ of the art world – is out with a new show titled Language of the Deceased. Recognised for his out-of-the-ordinary artworks, the artist has previously shown taxidermy sculptures, installations made from unusual materials, and several performance videos and photographs. In his latest exhibition, he transforms the gallery into an open studio, where viewers can watch Shivan in the actual process of creation.

5 Questions with the artist, Shine Shivan:

Artistic motivations “Nature.”
Inspirations “The core inside me.”
Artists at home “Keith Hearing and Alexander McQueen.”
Concerns that show up in your work “Crabs and sheep, metaphorically speaking….”
If you weren’t an artist…. “An ineffective politician.”

Language of the Deceased is on until January 18, 2015 at Gallery Maskara (6/7, 3rd Pasta Lane, Colaba, Mumbai).
