What’s a group of lawyers called? A greed or quarrel. And a collection of crows? A murder. In her latest art show, Lekha Washington presents her whimsical take on collective nouns. Contemplating how sometimes the collective affects the individual, Washington portrays her feelings through a series of video installations and digital images. Here’s a chance to watch grammar get creative.
5 Questions with the artist, Lekha Washington
- Artistic Motivations “I have been artistically inclined as far back as I can remember. I don’t see life in any other way.”
- Inspirations “I am moved by many things – good food, great conversation, politics, literature and the world around us. There are heroes everywhere, just not the ones we usually look at…”
- On the wall at home “Authentic art, created without a market in mind, is something I always will have a soft spot for. I’m really not sure art can be owned, though! There are too many artists I love, and would love to have a home chock-a-bloc with art.”
- Concerns that find a place in your art “Perhaps we can see it more these days, but the state of the world is sometimes a heartbreaking thing. People judging on the basis of religion or gender, the need for governments to suppress dissenting voices, hate and violence, the blind eye we turn towards the destruction of our environment – all these deeply bother me. Even as I try to be apolitical, it is near-impossible not to react with one’s work.”
- If not an artist, you would be… “An actor, a product designer, a poet. Even though I am an artist, I would be all those things.”
The Collective Noun or A Pound of Flesh and Suchlike is on display at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai (6/19, Grants Building, 2nd Floor, Arthur Bunder Road, Colaba) until March 31, 2016.
