Ella Prakash’s Quest for the Inner Self
Pick up a paintbrush, and you can express yourself in the most creative ways possible. For Bahrain-born Indian artist Ella Prakash, it is her canvas works that depict her world views and concerns. In her latest solo show, Quest – Inner Self, Prakash will have on display 30 acrylic paintings that portray her ‘inner soul’. In shades of red, blue and grey, the paintings comprise abstract figures juxtaposed with geometric shapes. A truly trippy way to find one’s inner, ever-changing self.
5 Questions with the artist, Ella Prakash
- Artistic Motivations “My life experiences motivate me to create my art to empower women. I describe my emotions and express them through my art.”
- Inspirations “They are all around me – my travels, my family, and my experiences inspire me.”
- On the wall at home “I would love to have the works of Paul Klee and Anish Kapoor.”
- Concerns that find a place in your art “My main concern about the world today is the society we live in. Art, for me has been a way to express my perceptions, dreams and aspirations for women. I tend to focus on the discrimination and double standards faced by women within the walls of society. Positive feminism is what I explore.”
- If you weren’t an artist, you would be… “maybe I might take up politics…to empower women.”
Quest – Inner Self is on display at Visual Art Gallery, New Delhi (India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, Near Airforce Bal Bharati School) until February 11, 2016.
